London has officially submitted its bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. The city has reached an agreement with West Ham to allow the event to be held at the London Stadium.
This agreement resolves a potential conflict, as West Ham had previously raised concerns about stadium priority during the football season. The deal means West Ham will play no more than two consecutive away games in the Premier League or three in the EFL during the 2029-30 season if London is successful.
London will compete against other candidate cities including Rome, Munich, and Nairobi, all of whom have also submitted applications for the 2029 championships.
Jack Buckner, CEO of UK Athletics and co-founder of Athletics Ventures, welcomed the deal, stating that bidding to hold the championships in the London Stadium was central to the UK's Olympic legacy plans. Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events and co-founder of Athletics Ventures, suggested the event could generate over £400m in economic and social benefits.
