The daily grind for drivers in central London's Congestion Charge zone is set to continue, with the £15 fee remaining in place despite its introduction over two decades ago in 2003. The charge applies daily between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM from Monday to Friday, with reduced hours on weekends and bank holidays.
No charge is applied between Christmas Day and New Year's Day bank holiday inclusive. Failure to pay the charge can result in a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £180, which is reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days. If the PCN is not paid within 28 days, the amount increases to £270.
The Congestion Charge zone covers much of central London, including Westminster, the City of London, and parts of Camden, Islington, Lambeth, and Southwark. Drivers are advised to check maps or use Transport for London's (TfL) online tools to confirm if their journey will take them into the zone.
Some drivers may be eligible for discounts or exemptions. These include residents living within the Congestion Charge zone, who can apply for a 90% discount. Other exempt vehicles and individuals include emergency service vehicles, NHS patients and staff travelling to specific appointments, licensed London taxis and PHVs, vehicles with nine or more seats, and fully electric vehicles.
The Congestion Charge is part of a broader strategy by the Mayor of London and TfL to manage traffic and air pollution. It operates alongside the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and the Low Emission Zone (LEZ), which target vehicle emissions rather than their presence on the roads. These interconnected schemes aim to create a greener, less congested urban environment.
