London Craft Week, a citywide event celebrating handmade items, drew nearly a quarter of a million visitors for its 12th edition this May. Guy Salter, the founder, observed significant queues outside various shows, workshops, installations, and talks, indicating a strong public interest in craft.
Since its start in 2015, the event has seen a substantial increase in momentum and the proliferation of craft-based practices across London. This growth is supported by organisations such as the Crafts Council, Qest (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust), Cockpit Arts, The King’s Foundation, and Heritage Crafts, which provide education, training, and awareness for craftspeople.
London's craft heritage dates back to the 12th century, when artisans and merchants formed guilds. Today, 114 worshipful companies remain. Creating a new generation of craftspeople is a key challenge for the sector, with some companies, including the Goldsmiths’ Company and Cordwainers’ Company, actively supporting apprenticeships and training.
