Transport for London's Commissioner Andy Lord has held crucial talks with Havering Council leaders about fixing the outer borough's transport problems, as pressure mounts to address rail delays and road congestion affecting thousands of daily commuters.
During his visit to the east London borough, Mr Lord met with council leader Ray Morgon and cabinet member Barry Mugglestone to discuss the future of Romford ring road, unreliable rail services to central London, and struggling local bus routes.
The council pressed the Commissioner on several urgent priorities, including better transport links to support the borough's growth and improved accessibility for residents. Officials raised particular concerns about traffic congestion, inadequate public transport options, and the need to align transport planning with regeneration projects across Havering.
Council leaders emphasised that proper transport infrastructure is vital for unlocking economic opportunities and improving quality of life for local people. The borough faces unique challenges as an area mixing urban centres with suburban and semi-rural communities.
Mr Lord acknowledged Havering's distinct transport needs and reportedly pledged to consider the council's concerns whilst exploring how TfL can work more effectively with the borough to deliver real improvements. The meeting forms part of TfL's wider strategy to ensure transport investment reflects the varying needs of all London boroughs.
Though no specific funding commitments were announced, the high-level discussions are expected to influence future transport planning decisions. The ongoing dialogue between TfL and councils like Havering remains essential for developing a comprehensive transport network across the capital.
