London's entire Tube and Overground network is set to be closed over the first May bank holiday weekend, from Saturday 4th to Monday 6th May. Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that all lines will be out of service as extensive engineering works are carried out across the capital's rail infrastructure.
The widespread closures are part of TfL's ongoing maintenance and upgrade programme, designed to improve reliability and capacity across the network. While disruptive, such works are often scheduled during quieter periods, such as bank holidays, to minimise the impact on daily commuters.
This means that millions of Londoners and visitors planning to use the Tube or Overground for leisure, shopping, or travel to events over the long weekend will need to make alternative arrangements. The closures encompass all Underground lines, including the Central, Piccadilly, Victoria, Jubilee, Northern, Bakerloo, District, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, and Waterloo & City lines, as well as the entire Overground network.
Despite the comprehensive rail closures, other transport options will remain available. Buses will continue to operate across London, and the Elizabeth Line, which runs through central London, will also be running. TfL is advising passengers to check their website or use journey planning apps well in advance to understand their options and potential alternative routes.
The decision to close all lines simultaneously for planned works is unusual in its scale, highlighting the significant nature of the engineering projects being undertaken. While essential for long-term network health, it will undoubtedly present challenges for those reliant on public transport during a popular time for city excursions.
