The ambitious project to deliver high-speed mobile connectivity across the entire London Underground network is progressing according to schedule, with significant advancements reported by Boldyn Networks and Transport for London (TfL). The collaboration aims to provide seamless 4G and 5G mobile coverage to millions of daily commuters, enhancing their experience and improving safety across the capital's extensive tube system.
Currently, substantial portions of several key lines, including the Jubilee, Northern, Central, and Elizabeth lines, already benefit from the new mobile infrastructure. This means passengers can make calls, stream content, and access the internet in previously unconnected sections of their journeys. The rollout involves installing thousands of kilometres of fibre optic cable and hundreds of cellular radio points within tunnels and stations, a complex engineering feat in an operational railway environment.
The initiative is part of a broader push to modernise London's transport infrastructure and bring it in line with other major global cities that have already implemented underground mobile coverage. For years, the lack of connectivity on the Tube has been a point of frustration for passengers, limiting their ability to work, communicate, or access emergency services whilst travelling below ground.
Boldyn Networks, the company responsible for delivering the infrastructure, has been working closely with TfL to minimise disruption during the installation process. The project's completion is anticipated by the end of 2024, at which point all four major mobile network operators – EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 – will be able to offer their customers continuous service across the entire Tube network.
Beyond passenger convenience, the enhanced connectivity is expected to have practical benefits for TfL's operational efficiency and emergency response capabilities. Clear communication channels for staff and rapid access to information for passengers during incidents are crucial elements of a modern transport system. The rollout also supports London's status as a leading global city, offering state-of-the-art infrastructure to residents and visitors alike.
