Millions of London commuters face major travel disruption in April 2026, with Transport for London announcing extensive planned closures across the Underground and Overground networks that will shut key routes for days at a time.
The Central Line will bear the brunt of the engineering works, closing entirely between Leytonstone and Hainault for nine consecutive days from Saturday 18 April to Sunday 26 April 2026. The line faces additional weekend closures throughout the month, including between Leytonstone and Woodford via Newbury Park on 4-5 April, and between Leytonstone and Newbury Park on 11-12 April.
Weekend closures will hit multiple lines simultaneously. The Bakerloo Line shuts between Queen's Park and Harrow & Wealdstone on 11-12 April, whilst the District Line cuts off service to Richmond from Turnham Green the same weekend. The Jubilee Line faces closure between Waterloo and Wembley Park on 18-19 April, coinciding with Northern Line closures between Golders Green and Edgware.
The Piccadilly Line will close completely between Acton Town and Uxbridge on 18-19 April, whilst the Metropolitan Line shuts between Wembley Park and Aldgate on 25-26 April. The Northern Line also faces a closure between Camden Town and Mill Hill East on Sunday 12 April.
Overground services suffer equally severe disruption. The Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside route closes on 4-5 April and again on 18-19 April, whilst the Euston to Watford Junction service shuts on 11-12 April. TfL says the works are essential for maintaining safety and efficiency across the capital's transport network.
Passengers must plan alternative routes using buses or unaffected Underground lines during closures. TfL will provide rail replacement buses for major disruptions and urges travellers to check the TfL website or app for updated journey planning information closer to the closure dates.
