His Majesty The King has approved the appointment of Lord Briggs of Westbourne as the next President of the Supreme Court. The King's decision follows advice from the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, based on a recommendation from an independent selection commission.
Lord Briggs is set to take up his new position in January 2027, when the current President, Lord Reed, retires. He will be the fifth individual to hold the role since the Supreme Court was established in 2009.
Lord Briggs was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2017. Prior to this, he served as a Lord Justice of Appeal from 2013 and was appointed Deputy Head of Civil Justice in January 2016.
