Luigi Mangione is reportedly expected to plead guilty today in Manhattan federal court to charges of stalking resulting in the death of Brian Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, in 2024. The hearing is scheduled for 11am ET.
This potential plea deal in the federal case comes less than a month before a scheduled trial on 8 September for a New York state murder charge related to Thompson's fatal shooting. The federal trial for the stalking charges was due to take place in January and carries a potential life sentence.
If Mangione pleads guilty in the federal case, his lawyers could seek to dismiss the state case by arguing double jeopardy. However, state prosecutors could argue that the federal stalking case and the state murder case address different harms.
