Maddison's Magic Return Sparks Tottenham's First Premier League Win

James Maddison made a spectacular return to Tottenham's starting line-up, scoring in their 3-1 victory against Coventry City, marking Spurs' first Premier League win this season.

  • The victory is Tottenham's first Premier League win this season, moving them off the bottom of the table.
  • Dejan Kulusevski also returned to action as a substitute after 526 days out with a knee injury.

James Maddison delivered a moment of magic on his first start in 18 months, scoring a brilliant right-foot finish to set Tottenham Hotspur on their way to a 3-1 Premier League victory against Coventry City. The win marks Spurs' first in the league this season, lifting them off the bottom of the table.

Maddison, who missed most of last season with an ACL injury and fractured his shoulder in the current campaign's opening match, made his mark in the 14th minute. He celebrated with his trademark imaginary dart throw before kissing the Spurs badge, despite the goal coming against his former club.

The 29-year-old's significance to Spurs is highlighted by their struggle in his absence, having won just 12 of 57 Premier League games since his last top-flight goal in February 2025. Omar Marmoush scored his first goal for the club, and Ben Davies added another in stoppage time, while Dejan Kulusevski also made a welcome return to the pitch after 526 days out with a knee injury.

Manager Roberto de Zerbi will now look to build on this result, with a challenging trip to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge scheduled for Saturday evening.

Why this matters: The return of key players like James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, coupled with their first league win, could provide a much-needed boost for Tottenham's season.
