The Independent newspaper has once again partnered with the Music Venue Trust (MVT) to bring back its 'Main Stage' initiative, a campaign designed to support and raise the profile of grassroots music venues across the United Kingdom. Returning for summer 2026, the programme aims to spotlight the crucial role these venues play in the British music landscape, from fostering emerging talent to serving their local communities.
This relaunch comes at a critical time for the sector, which faces unprecedented challenges. The Music Venue Trust's 2025 annual report revealed a stark reality: over half of the UK's grassroots music venues (GMVs) failed to generate any profit during the year. This financial strain led to the permanent closure of 30 venues and the loss of approximately 6,000 jobs, representing about 20 per cent of the industry's workforce. Factors such as the cost-of-living crisis, making live music less affordable for many fans, and escalating energy bills have compounded these difficulties.
The 'Main Stage' initiative, which initially ran for a year in 2024, will see The Independent championing these venues through dedicated coverage. Every fortnight throughout the summer, the campaign will feature one selected grassroots venue from across the UK. These features will include in-depth articles, providing insight into the daily operations, triumphs, and struggles of the individuals who run these vital spaces. Past artists who began their careers in such venues include household names like Adele, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, and Coldplay, underscoring their significance as launchpads for future stars.
Each of the eight venues chosen for the initiative will receive substantial support, including a dedicated article in The Independent, GBP5,000 worth of advertising inventory, and custom design assets for their communication and marketing efforts. This package aims to enhance their visibility and provide tangible assistance in attracting audiences and support. Mark Davyd, founder and CEO of the Music Venue Trust, expressed optimism about the initiative, stating that while times remain challenging, there is a sense of potential for positive change within the sector, and the 'Main Stage' serves as an essential guide to this ongoing narrative.
The campaign kicks off by shining a light on Dubrek Studios in Derby. This East Midlands venue, which began as a recording and rehearsal space in 2001, has evolved over the years into a dedicated performance venue with a café and bar. Its inclusion highlights the diverse nature and resilience of grassroots venues, often overlooked but integral to Britain's vibrant DIY music scene.
