Two of London's busiest railway stations will shut for 22 days as part of a £20m upgrade to central London's rail network. Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations will close completely to allow Network Rail to carry out extensive works on tracks and signalling systems.
The closures will affect thousands of daily commuters who rely on the stations for journeys into the heart of London. Network Rail says the investment will "significantly improve the passenger experience" by boosting reliability and efficiency across the network.
Alternative routes and transport options will be available during the closure period, but passengers are urged to check the latest travel information before setting off. The rail operator is working with train companies and Transport for London to ensure commuters can plan alternative journeys.
The upgrade represents one of the most significant infrastructure projects to hit central London's railway network in recent years. Network Rail describes the work as crucial for improving long-term reliability, though acknowledges the short-term disruption will be considerable for the capital's travelling public.
