Network Rail has announced a significant investment of approximately £12 million into essential track renewals aimed at improving rail journeys between Newport and Cardiff. The comprehensive upgrade project is designed to enhance the reliability of services and increase passenger comfort along this crucial stretch of the South Wales rail network.
The works will involve the replacement of 1.5 miles of track, a substantial undertaking that also includes the installation of 14,000 tonnes of new ballast. Ballast, the stones that form the trackbed, plays a vital role in supporting the sleepers and rails, distributing the load, and allowing for drainage. Replacing worn-out ballast and track components is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of the railway and preventing future disruptions.
Scheduled to commence in late April, the renewals will primarily take place over six weekends, concluding in late May.
