A 67-year-old man from Windsor has been released on conditional police bail after an alleged incident on the River Thames near Maidenhead Rowing Club. Thames Valley Police confirmed the man's release as their investigation continues.

Olympic rower Jack Beaumont, who won silver at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, described a “frightening” encounter on Sunday, 30 August, at approximately 7.15am. He reported seeing a motorboat collide with a rowing boat before the driver allegedly began shouting, swearing, and threatening him.

Mr Beaumont told The Times he was concerned the motorboat driver, who he described as “erratic” and “volatile,” would “ram” into him. Police stated that a man verbally abused rowers and drove a white and blue boat dangerously, with the boat reportedly making contact with a rowing boat and its occupant.

Detective Inspector Laura Al-Owaied has appealed for witnesses or anyone with CCTV, dash-cam, or mobile phone footage from the area between 7am and 7.30am on Sunday to come forward. Maidenhead Rowing Club described the event as a “serious and dangerous incident,” noting that damage was caused to club equipment.

Why this matters: The incident has caused concern within the local community and among river users, prompting an increased police presence for reassurance.
