A 26-year-old man, identified by Greek police as a foreigner, has been arrested in connection with the death of Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a 38-year-old Scottish woman. Her body was discovered inside a suitcase by a homeless man in a derelict building in the Kypseli area of Athens on 18 July.
Ms Ross, understood to be from Edinburgh, is believed to have died between five and seven days before her body was found. The Hellenic police identified the victim using fingerprints.
Police stated they analysed video footage to identify the suspect, who reportedly confessed on Thursday. He is believed to have placed her body into a suitcase and transported it to the abandoned site. It is also alleged that he used her bank card to withdraw money in the days following her death.
A replica pistol and a knife were reportedly found at the suspect’s home. Police have filed a case against him for manslaughter, robbery, and violation of weapons laws.
The UK Foreign Office has confirmed it is providing consular support to Ms Ross's family and is in contact with local authorities. Police Scotland is also liaising with Greek authorities and offering support to her family in Scotland.
