A man has been arrested in connection with reports of a suspicious item at Newcastle University. Northumbria Police confirmed that a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of communicating false information and remains in police custody.

Police were called to the Kings Road area of the campus at 14:10 BST. A large cordon was established, closing streets including St Thomas' Street and Brewery Lane, and causing disruption around the university and the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

A university spokesperson stated that a small number of buildings were temporarily evacuated. By 18:00 BST, the cordon had been lifted, except for a section outside the university's Islamic Society, which occupies an annex in the King George VI building. Police searches have since been stood down.
