A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of fraud at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, West Midlands Police confirmed. The arrest on Saturday evening led to the postponement of medal ceremonies and the suspension of transport services at Alexander Stadium.

The incident caused significant delays, with some athletes queuing for official transport from 10:15pm and not arriving back at their hotels until 12:45am on Sunday. Spectators also faced long waits for shuttle buses, with reports of a heavy police presence.

Birmingham 2026 organisers stated that transport operations returned to normal in the early hours of Sunday after necessary security measures were carried out. The arrested man remains in custody for questioning.
