A man has been charged after a protest in Gosport, Hampshire, following the arrival of migrants. Jamie Bennett, 38, of Thyme Avenue in Whiteley, Fareham, has been charged with failing to comply with a prohibited assembly direction.
The Home Office stated that 149 migrants were rescued in a mid-Channel operation by the RNLI and a French vessel on Sunday, before being brought ashore at Gosport.
During the protest, which involved about 150 anti-migrant demonstrators on Haslar Road, flares were reportedly set off and scuffles occurred with police. Police made 12 arrests, including 11 men aged between 22 and 59, and a 57-year-old woman. Suspected offences included assaulting police officers, affray, and racially aggravated public order.
Mr Bennett has been bailed to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on 26 November. The remaining 10 men and one woman arrested have also been bailed pending further inquiries.
