Authorities in Kentucky have charged an 18-year-old man with murder and several counts of assault after a shooting in Lexington left a teenager dead and four others injured. Jametrius Griffin was arrested less than 24 hours after the incident at Charles Young Park in the city's downtown on Saturday night.
Lexington police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 7pm and found five people shot. A 16-year-old boy, identified as Di’Zhon Robertson, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The injured included two adults, a 14-year-old, and a 4-year-old.
Griffin faces charges including murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, and tampering with physical evidence. The shooting occurred during the East End Day community celebration.
This incident was one of nine mass shootings reported across the US over the weekend. The Gun Violence Archive (GVA) defines a mass shooting as an event where four or more victims are killed or wounded. As of Monday morning, the US had recorded 305 mass shootings in 2026, with 8,152 lives lost to gun violence.
