Manchester City Women made an eventful return to the Women's Champions League, battling back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw away against Bayern Munich. This result makes them the first English team to avoid defeat against the German side in European competition.
City's Germany international Carlotta Wamser netted her first goal for the club in the 86th minute, finding herself unmarked in the penalty area to level the score. This came after Khadija Shaw had earlier missed a penalty opportunity to equalise.
Bayern Munich had established a 2-0 lead within the first half-hour. However, City found a crucial goal just before half-time when Beth Mead tapped in following Kerstin Casparij's break. The hosts had protested the goal, citing a smoke canister on the pitch, but the goal stood as Casparij had crossed before reaching the smoke.
City's improved second-half performance earned them the point, despite being dominated before the interval. Giulia Gwinn opened the scoring for Bayern in the 11th minute, and Casparij later diverted a cross into her own goal.
