Tony Hall, 62, has been on a Home Office deportation list for 14 years, despite having lived in the UK since 1976. This decision has prevented him from working, renting accommodation, or receiving benefits since his release from detention in 2012.
Mr Hall was convicted in 2001 of conspiracy to rob and having a firearm with intent, for which he served an eight-year prison sentence. He was released from prison in 2009 and transferred to immigration detention.
Born in Barbados, Mr Hall arrived in Britain at the age of 12. He states he has no surviving relatives in Barbados and his memories of the country are hazy. In 2010, he was put on a flight to Barbados by the Home Office but was returned to London the following day after border officials in Barbados refused him entry.
Mr Hall is required to attend a Home Office reporting centre fortnightly, a journey he estimates he has made over 350 times. He hopes that sharing his story might lead to the Home Office exercising discretion and lifting the deportation order.
