A man has been given a six-month jail term in France after threatening to kill a female primary school teacher. The incident occurred in Le Fauga, a village near Toulouse, after the teacher disciplined his son at a primary school.
The sentencing followed a fast-track hearing on Thursday, six days after the events. The teacher has since been granted official protection and is on sick leave.
French Education Minister Edouard Geffray stated that "No teacher should be afraid to do their job. Attacking one of them is attacking the entire institution." He added that this case would trigger one of the first uses of a new decree, which he steered through over the summer, aimed at protecting staff from significant risks to their safety or health from a student's family member.
The decree, passed in July, allows for a student to be transferred to another school if there is a significant risk to staff. It is thought the boy and his younger sister may now be moved to a different school outside Le Fauga.
