A man who died after entering a canal while fleeing from police near Notting Hill Carnival has been named as Karnell Kelly. The 25-year-old died in hospital after entering the Grand Union Canal off Kensal Road, west London.
Metropolitan Police officers had attempted to stop Mr Kelly near Harrow Road as he approached the carnival wearing a face covering at about 15:20 BST on Monday. He then fled on foot.
Officers and members of the public entered the canal to pull Mr Kelly from the water. He was then taken to a central London hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 16:40 BST.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the incident and reviewing body-worn video from officers who chased Mr Kelly. The IOPC has appealed for information or any video footage from the public or from nearby properties, boats, and barges.
