Manchester Piccadilly station is set to face significant disruption throughout February as Network Rail embarks on a major programme of track upgrades. The extensive works, which kicked off at the start of the month, will impact services operated by multiple train companies, with diversions, cancellations, and rail replacement bus services in place.
The project aims to renew vital sections of track infrastructure around the busy Manchester hub, enhancing reliability and efficiency for passengers. However, the scale of the upgrades requires considerable alterations to train schedules, affecting TransPennine Express, Northern, East Midlands Railway, and Avanti West Coast services.
Operators have issued warnings to their customers, advising them to regularly check journey planners and allow extra time for travel due to the disruption. Some services will be diverted to alternative stations or terminate short of Manchester Piccadilly, with onward travel facilitated by bus.
A Network Rail spokesperson stressed that while short-term disruption is unavoidable, the upgrades are critical for improving connectivity and performance across the North West region. The works form part of a national programme to modernise and maintain the UK's railway infrastructure, ensuring it can meet future demand.
Local authorities and transport bodies have been working with Network Rail and the train operators to mitigate the impact where possible, including providing clear signage and information at affected stations.
Passengers travelling during February are advised to consult the National Rail Enquiries website or their train operator's journey planner for the most up-to-date information before heading to the station. This is particularly important for those with pre-booked tickets or fixed appointments.
