A national register for short-term and holiday lets in England is scheduled to be fully operational by March 2027. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy confirmed this timetable in Parliament on 3 September.
The register is anticipated to be mandatory and will primarily operate online. However, the government has not yet confirmed details such as the information property owners must provide, how the register will be administered, or the frequency of registration.
The scheme aims to provide local authorities with more data on the number and location of short-term lets in their areas. Ministers expect this data to assist councils in assessing the impact of holiday accommodation on local housing markets and to support the enforcement of existing health and safety requirements.
Propertymark has previously advocated for greater parity between short-term lets and the private rented sector. The industry body stated that while short-term lets can support tourism, local authorities require effective tools to address situations where high numbers reduce housing availability for local residents.
