Consumer champion Martin Lewis has highlighted a significant opportunity for UK taxpayers to claim a year's worth of tax relief for working from home, even if their remote work was minimal. The MoneySavingExpert founder explained that individuals who worked from home for even a single day during the 2023/24 tax year may be eligible to claim tax relief on their household bills, potentially saving hundreds of pounds.
The tax relief, set at £6 per week, is a long-standing provision by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) designed to offset additional costs incurred by employees working from their homes. Historically, this relief was available to those whose employers required them to work from home. However, during the pandemic, the criteria were broadened, allowing anyone who worked from home to make a claim. While the pandemic-era flexibility has since been tightened, Lewis points out that a crucial aspect remains: if an employee was required to work from home by their employer for any period, they can claim for the entire tax year.
For a basic-rate taxpayer, the £6 per week relief translates to a saving of £1.20 per week, or approximately £62.40 over the course of a year. Higher-rate taxpayers, paying 40% tax, would see a saving of £2.40 per week, amounting to around £124.80 annually. This non-trivial sum can make a difference to household budgets, particularly during periods of high living costs.
Lewis's advice underscores that the claim can be made retrospectively for the full tax year, irrespective of how many days or weeks an individual actually worked from home. The key is that their employer mandated some form of remote work. The process for claiming this relief is relatively straightforward and can be completed online through the government's official portal. Once a claim is submitted and approved, HMRC adjusts the individual's tax code for the entire year, ensuring the relief is applied effectively.
This guidance serves as a timely reminder for millions of Britons to review their working arrangements during the past tax year. With the deadline for the 2023/24 tax year approaching, ensuring all eligible tax relief is claimed can contribute to better financial management for households across the UK.
