Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has publicly criticised the club's leadership, including technical director Jason Wilcox, for what he perceives as a lack of sufficient squad investment during the summer transfer window. Martínez made his comments on Amazon Prime following United's 2-0 defeat by Atlético Madrid on Tuesday night.
Despite United signing three midfielders, a reserve goalkeeper, but no new forwards or defenders, Martínez's remarks highlight concerns about the club's transfer strategy. The club reportedly pursued defenders Lewis Hall and Myles Lewis-Skelly but was unable to sell existing defenders like Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, or Martínez himself, whose contracts are set to expire next summer.
Martínez's public statements have drawn criticism from former players. Wayne Rooney reportedly called the comments "disrespectful," while Ashley Young agreed Martínez did not "feel like he's got the right." Rio Ferdinand also observed on his podcast that "these things don't end well, man."
The criticism from Martínez is seen by some as implicitly holding the Glazers accountable for over two decades of ownership, during which more than £1bn has reportedly been drained from the club through dividends, share sales, and interest payments on debt, alongside alleged neglect of Old Trafford and the Carrington training ground.
