A Massachusetts teenager, Arjun Aravind, 17, is being held without bail after being accused of the double murder of his mother and younger brother. Prosecutors have stated that the case is connected to his use of ChatGPT.
Mr Aravind appeared in Concord district court on Thursday morning for his arraignment, where a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf for murder and other charges. Authorities allege he killed his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, at their family home on Tuesday.
The investigation began after the teenager's tutor was unable to make contact with residents during a scheduled appointment. The teen's father then contacted police, who found the two victims dead inside the residence shortly after 6:30pm.
Middlesex county district attorney Marian Ryan stated that the investigation has shown Mr Aravind "had recently been demonstrating some concerning behavior, including using the internet and ChatGPT to make searches for theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family." She added that he was "engaged in the use of ChatGPT in creating fantasy stories, kind of the gothic novel kind of stories, asking questions, creating characters, asking what about this if this happened to that, and they seem to appear to relate to threats to his family."
While the official causes of death have not yet been determined, prosecutor Suzanne Wiseman described the incident as a "physical and violent struggle," noting that "blunt force trauma was used in some fashion on both individuals."
Mr Aravind was found and arrested early Wednesday morning inside his mother's car, approximately 13 miles away in Wayland, after an alarm was triggered in a parking lot. Investigators recovered evidence from the vehicle that prosecutors say was connected to the scene at the family's home.
He faces two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a household or family member, two counts of assault and battery, use of a vehicle without authority, and theft of a motor vehicle.
