A massive fire has engulfed a 1 million square foot warehouse complex in Tracy, California, sending shockwaves across the US West Coast and prompting widespread evacuations of neighbouring properties. The inferno, which erupted on Thursday afternoon, continued to rage into Friday, threatening to spread its destructive path as emergency services battled to bring the extensive blaze under control.
The fire originated at a large distribution centre for Medline, a prominent provider of medical-surgical products, situated approximately 55 miles east of San Francisco. The intense flames and thick black smoke visible in aerial images underscored the severity of the incident. According to Randall Bradley, Fire Chief of the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority, the fire subsequently spread across the street to a FedEx facility, where crews successfully prevented further escalation.
Authorities initiated evacuations across a significant portion of the industrial area as strong winds heightened the risk of embers spreading. Sergeant Michael Richards of the Tracy Police Department confirmed that while nearby facilities were evacuated, no residential properties had been affected by early Friday. The warehouse is located within a vast industrial park that also houses major fulfilment and distribution centres for companies such as Amazon and Home Depot.
Medline has confirmed that all its employees and personnel at the site have been accounted for. A spokesperson for the company stated, "We are coordinating closely with local authorities and first responders as we assess the fire’s impact and will share more details as they become available." The destroyed facility was a critical hub for medical supplies, including latex gloves, masks, and surgical instruments, which were in high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tracy Mayor Dan Arriola stated that officials are currently evaluating air quality and potential health impacts on local residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with Chief Bradley noting that challenging conditions, including low humidity, high temperatures, and strong winds, exacerbated the blaze. Furthermore, firefighting efforts were reportedly hindered by a broken sprinkler system and low water pressure within the warehouse's internal water supply system.
