European 400m champion Matt Hudson-Smith has been offered the opportunity to serve as 'mayor for a day' in Wolverhampton. The offer from Stephen Simkins, leader of Wolverhampton Council, follows a joke made by the athlete after his recent victory.
Hudson-Smith, who is Wolverhampton-born, had quipped about running for Mayor of Birmingham and Wolverhampton after securing his latest European gold medal. Mr Simkins stated, "I feel sure we can let him have the civic chains for a day if he wants to contact us."
The 31-year-old's win on Wednesday made him the joint-most decorated man in the history of the European Championships. Wolverhampton has previously seen an Olympic silver medallist, Ben Whittaker, spend a day wearing the chains of office in 2021.
