The mother of Matthew Schofield, whose death in Leicester in 2023 is the subject of an ongoing murder investigation, has expressed deep concerns that police may have overlooked vital opportunities during the initial stages of the inquiry. Emma Daniels believes that officers were not sufficiently thorough in their early investigation, leaving her family grappling with unanswered questions three years later.
Ms Daniels stated that her son's death was initially treated as unexplained rather than suspicious from the outset. She recalled that another of her sons provided police with information regarding a potential assault on Matthew, but was told there was no evidence to support this at the time. However, this position reportedly changed quickly after Leicestershire Police received CCTV footage from a local business, which suggested Matthew may have been assaulted. Ms Daniels worries that if her other son's concerns had been taken more seriously, the police might have conducted a more comprehensive investigation in the critical first 72 hours.
Leicestershire Police, however, stated that the possibility of the 34-year-old having been assaulted was considered "from the outset" and that his death remains an active investigation. Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team, explained that while Matthew's death was initially treated as unexplained, this did not prevent officers from carrying out essential enquiries. She added that prior to the CCTV footage being recovered, the available information was not independently corroborated to provide sufficient evidential basis for immediate enforcement action.
A total of 19 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. Three years on, 14 of these individuals remain under investigation, though no one has yet been charged. Eight men, aged between 20 and 37, are being investigated on suspicion of murder, while five men, aged 22 to 34, and a 63-year-old woman are under investigation on suspicion of assisting an offender. Ms Daniels finds it difficult to comprehend why, despite the significant number of arrests, no further action has been taken, suggesting that individuals may be protecting each other.
The force confirmed that a murder investigation was launched the day after Matthew was found, following initial fast-track actions including CCTV scoping, forensic assessment, and area searches. A post-mortem examination at the time found "no definite cause of death," leading to the initial unexplained classification. Despite multiple public appeals for information, the prolonged wait for answers has taken a severe toll on Matthew's family, with Ms Daniels describing them as "completely different" and "fractured."
The family's anguish highlights the profound impact of unsolved cases on loved ones, as they continue their search for justice and closure.
