Network Rail is warning passengers to check their journeys before travelling during the May bank holidays, as essential engineering works will disrupt some services despite most routes remaining open.
The rail operator confirmed that whilst the majority of Britain's railway network will stay operational for both passenger and freight services on 6th May and 27th May, strategic maintenance work will affect certain lines during the holiday weekends.
Bank holiday periods are routinely used for major infrastructure projects when commuter numbers typically drop, allowing Network Rail to carry out vital upgrades more efficiently. However, this means some passengers face potential delays, diversions or replacement bus services.
Travellers are urged to consult National Rail Enquiries or their specific train operator's journey planners for the latest service updates and alternative route information before setting off.
"We're committed to keeping disruption to a minimum whilst progressing with upgrades that are essential for the future resilience and capacity of the network," Network Rail said.
The timing reflects the challenge of maintaining Britain's ageing rail infrastructure whilst keeping services running for families visiting relatives and tourists exploring the country during the popular holiday weekends. The network also handles crucial freight movements that keep the UK economy moving.
Most services will run normally, but passengers who plan ahead and check for potential changes on their specific routes are likely to have a smoother journey.
