McConnell Wins Commonwealth Gold After Turning Down Love Island

Jon McConnell, 23, from Belfast's Holy Trinity club, claimed victory in the men's 60kg boxing category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. His win comes after he decided to forgo an appearance on the ITV show Love Island.

McConnell had revealed earlier in the Games that he and Northern Ireland team-mate Kaci Rock had applied for the reality show but turned down interviews with producers. Following his gold medal win against Orlando Holley-Sotomi of Wales, McConnell stated he would not reapply for Love Island, instead focusing on his ambition to reach the 2028 Olympics.

In other boxing news, England's Sacha Hickey, 22, secured a unanimous victory over Northern Ireland's Kaci Rock in the women's 65kg division. Hickey, a Millwall fan who started boxing at six, is now sixth in the world rankings and aims for gold at the upcoming European Championships. England also saw Patris Mughalzai win gold in the men's 65kg division and Isaac Okoh triumph at 90kg.

Northern Ireland's Michaela Walsh, despite having won four previous Commonwealth Games gold medals, took home silver after being outpointed by India's Jaismine Lamboria in the 57kg category.
