Strong winds of up to 60mph will batter the UK today as the Met Office issued a 12-hour yellow weather warning covering England, Wales and large parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The warning, effective from early morning, forecasts widespread disruption to transport and power supplies as gusts reach 45-55mph inland and up to 60mph on exposed coasts and higher ground. Heavy rainfall will accompany the winds, raising fears of localised flooding and treacherous driving conditions.
London, Birmingham and Bristol are among major cities expected to bear the brunt of the weather. Welsh coastal communities face particular danger from stronger gusts, whilst Northern Ireland and western Scotland—including the Highlands and Islands—must prepare for large waves and sea spray along coastlines.
Transport bosses warn of delays to trains and ferries, with longer road journey times likely. Power cuts and damage to temporary structures remain possible throughout the warning period. Temperatures will stay mild at 8-12C despite the unsettled conditions.
Forecasters advise residents to secure garden furniture and avoid unnecessary travel during peak conditions. Motorists should exercise extreme caution on exposed roads and bridges, watching for debris. Coastal communities are urged to stay alert for large waves and flying objects.
