The Met Office has issued a stark warning of 'danger to life' as Storm X brings powerful winds and heavy rainfall across significant parts of the UK. Amber warnings are in effect for Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, where gusts could reach 70-80mph, threatening widespread disruption.
Gusts of this magnitude pose a substantial risk of flying debris, building damage, and travel chaos. In exposed coastal areas and on higher ground, winds of up to 80mph are forecast, while inland regions can expect speeds of 50-60mph. This could lead to power cuts affecting thousands, leaving them without electricity.
Yellow warnings for wind and rain cover much of the rest of the UK, with England's North West, North East, Yorkshire and Humber, and parts of the Midlands at risk from gusts of up to 55mph. Wales is also under a yellow warning for both wind and rain, which could cause localised flooding and treacherous driving conditions.
In Scotland, the amber warning affects much of the central belt, Highlands, and islands, where the strongest winds are expected. Northern Ireland's entire territory falls within an amber warning for wind, increasing the risk of trees being uprooted and coastal areas experiencing large waves and spray.
The Met Office urges the public to take precautions, including securing loose outdoor furniture and avoiding non-essential travel in affected areas. Temperatures will remain relatively mild, but the biting winds will make it feel significantly colder, ranging from 8-12°C in the south to 5-9°C in the north.
