The Met Office has issued urgent "danger to life" weather warnings across Britain as severe thunderstorms threaten to bring devastating floods and lightning strikes to millions of homes and businesses.
Amber and yellow alerts are now in force, with forecasters warning that intense rainfall could trigger sudden flooding and widespread travel chaos. Roads and railways face significant delays and cancellations, whilst power cuts and lightning damage to buildings remain serious risks.
Amber warnings cover parts of England including the Midlands, East Anglia and southern regions, where rainfall could quickly overwhelm drainage systems. Yellow warnings stretch across much of England, Wales, and parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, bringing thunderstorms, heavy downpours and localised flooding. Wind gusts may reach 30-40mph in exposed areas.
The Met Office urges people to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and secure loose garden furniture. Motorists should prepare for difficult conditions, reduced visibility and standing water. "Never attempt to drive through floodwater, as depths can be deceptive and currents strong," officials warn. Temperatures will remain warm and humid at 18-24C before the storms hit.
Emergency services are bracing for increased call volumes whilst residents in flood-prone areas are advised to review flood plans and move valuables to higher ground. The Met Office will continue updating warnings as the weather system develops.
