The Met Office has issued double yellow weather warnings across the UK this week, with heavy rain and strong winds set to disrupt travel and daily life across Scotland, northern England, and Northern Ireland.
A yellow rain warning covers western Scotland from 9am Tuesday until 6pm Wednesday. Forecasters expect 30-40mm of rainfall across most areas, with localised spots receiving up to 60mm. Higher ground could see 80-100mm, raising the risk of surface water flooding and transport disruption.
Strong winds will follow, with a separate yellow warning from 3am Wednesday until 6pm the same day. Gusts of 50-60mph are expected across northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, whilst exposed coastal areas and higher ground could face winds of 60-70mph.
The combination poses significant challenges for drivers, particularly on exposed routes. Authorities warn of potential damage to temporary structures, falling trees, and power cuts. Coastal communities face additional risks from large waves and debris being thrown onto seafronts, roads, and properties.
Despite the unsettled conditions, temperatures will remain mild at 8-12°C, though wind chill will make it feel considerably colder. Residents are urged to allow extra time for journeys, exercise caution on roads affected by spray and sudden gusts, and stay updated with Met Office forecasts before travelling or planning outdoor activities.
