The country is bracing itself for a potentially treacherous winter blast as the Met Office issues extensive yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across 60 areas of the UK. With temperatures set to plummet, hazardous conditions on roads and pavements are forecasted, threatening disruptions to public transport and infrastructure.
From the North West to Yorkshire and the Humber, major urban centres such as Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, and Newcastle in England could be hit by snow accumulations and icy stretches. In Scotland, a vast swathe of land from the Central Belt up to the Highlands is under warning, with Edinburgh and Glasgow set for wintry conditions. Wales faces similar warnings, particularly in higher ground areas like Snowdonia, as well as lower elevations in parts of the north and central regions.
The warnings predict snowfall of 2-5 cm at lower levels, with higher ground areas potentially seeing 10-20 cm. Wind speeds are expected to reach up to 30-40 mph in exposed areas, significantly adding to the wind chill factor and making conditions feel even colder than the forecasted temperatures – which could drop as low as 0°C.
Residents are urged to prepare for potential travel delays on roads, with some rural communities at risk of temporary isolation. There is also a risk of power cuts and disruptions to mobile phone coverage. Pedestrians should exercise caution due to slippery pavements and cycle paths, while drivers must check their routes beforehand, allow extra time for journeys, and ensure their vehicles are winter-ready.
