Snow is set to hit North West England tonight as the Met Office issued a fresh yellow weather warning, with up to 10cm expected on higher ground and treacherous icy conditions threatening widespread travel disruption.
The alert covers Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, and parts of Merseyside from 6pm Friday until 3am Saturday. Forecasters warn that 2-5cm of snow will accumulate over ground above 200 metres, with some localised areas potentially seeing up to 10cm. Even lower elevations face a dusting that could quickly turn to ice as temperatures plummet overnight.
Despite light winds of 5-10mph, the bitter conditions will make temperatures feel as low as -5°C in exposed areas. The combination of cold air and precipitation poses significant risks for anyone venturing out during the warning period.
The cold snap is gripping much of the UK beyond the North West. Scotland and Northern Ireland are enduring sleet and snow showers on northern hills, whilst Wales remains largely dry but faces widespread overnight frosts. The Midlands and North East are also experiencing freezing conditions with ice forming on untreated surfaces.
Drivers face particularly hazardous conditions and should allow extra time for journeys, maintain safe distances, and check road conditions before travelling. Pedestrians must watch for slippery surfaces, whilst residents are urged to check on vulnerable neighbours and ensure adequate home heating.
The warning follows a shift to colder northern air that has brought unsettled weather across Britain. The Met Office continues monitoring conditions closely and will issue updates if the situation deteriorates or warnings require extension.
