The UK is bracing itself for an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures set to soar above 40 degrees Celsius in parts of England on Monday and Tuesday. The Met Office has issued its first-ever red extreme heat warning, covering a swathe of central, eastern, and south-eastern England, where the risk to life is deemed "high".
Residents are being urged to take immediate action to stay safe, including staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day, drinking plenty of fluids, and checking on vulnerable neighbours and relatives. Government agencies and emergency services are also warning that working practices and daily routines must be substantially altered to mitigate the risks. The red warning affects areas such as Greater London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, York, and large tracts of the South East, East Midlands, and East of England.
While Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are under amber warnings for extreme heat, temperatures in these regions are still expected to be exceptionally high – generally ranging from 30C to 35C. However, the red warning area is where the critical risk to life is most acute. The Met Office has warned that transport networks will face significant challenges, with potential rail delays and cancellations due to buckling tracks and melting road surfaces.
There's also an increased risk of wildfires in dry rural areas, while the NHS is preparing for a surge in heat-related illnesses and there are concerns about the strain on critical infrastructure, including power supplies. The Met Office advises against non-essential travel during peak heat hours.
Practical safety advice includes wearing light, loose-fitting clothing, staying in the shade, avoiding strenuous activity, and carrying water. Pet owners must also ensure their animals have access to shade and fresh water. This extreme heat event serves as a stark reminder of the impacts of climate change and the need for preparedness and adaptation.
