Power cuts and travel chaos loom as the Met Office issues an amber weather warning for severe winds across much of the UK, with gusts reaching up to 70mph expected from early tomorrow morning.
The warning signals heightened risk of damage to buildings and significant disruption across northern England, eastern Scotland, and coastal Wales. Coastal areas and higher ground face the strongest gusts of 60-70mph, whilst inland regions will still endure winds of 45-55mph.
Six areas have been identified as particularly vulnerable to power supply interruptions, prompting advice for residents to secure loose garden furniture and prepare for potential outages. The Met Office warns falling trees and branches pose a danger to life and property.
Transport networks face severe disruption, with drivers of high-sided vehicles, caravans, and motorcycles urged to exercise extreme caution or postpone non-essential journeys. Rail, ferry, and air services are likely to face delays or cancellations, with passengers advised to check with operators before travelling.
Coastal communities must be wary of large waves and spray creating hazardous conditions along seafronts. The combination of high winds and recent rainfall could trigger localised flooding where drainage systems become overwhelmed by wind-driven rain.
The North East and parts of the North West of England will bear the brunt of the winds, alongside sections of the East Midlands. Scotland's eastern coastal regions and central belt areas face particular risk, with warnings extending to Wales's western and southern coasts. Northern Ireland expects strong winds, though potentially less severe than amber warning areas.
Safety advice includes staying indoors during peak conditions, avoiding coastal areas, and ensuring mobile phones remain charged. Homeowners should check for loose roof tiles and monitor local weather updates throughout the warning period.
