The Met Office has sounded the alarm on a severe weather warning, with thunderstorms and heavy rain set to batter large parts of the UK over the coming days. The potential for disruption is high, with localised flooding, power outages, and treacherous driving conditions all on the cards.
For much of England, particularly across the Midlands, southern and eastern regions, a yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued. This means residents can expect heavy downpours, lightning strikes, and hail showers, with some areas bracing themselves for 20-30mm of rain in just an hour – or up to 50mm over a few short hours. Wales is also in the firing line, where the combination of rain and thunder poses a significant risk of surface water flooding in vulnerable areas.
Northern Ireland is included in these warnings too, with residents advised to be on high alert for sudden changes in the weather. Meanwhile, Scotland may experience unsettled conditions – particularly in the south – with scattered showers forecasted to hit the region.
The Met Office has urged caution across all affected areas, warning drivers of reduced visibility and the risk of aquaplaning. Travelers are also advised to avoid walking or driving through floodwater, which can be deceptively deep and have strong currents. Checking local weather forecasts and travel updates is a must before embarking on any journeys.
