Thunderstorms will sweep across large parts of the UK today, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for heavy downpours, lightning and 40mph winds that threaten flooding and travel disruption.
The warning covers substantial areas of England, Wales and southern Scotland from Tuesday morning through to late evening. Heavy rain could flood homes and businesses across the Midlands, South East and North West England, while eastern Wales faces surface water flooding that will hit travel routes. Scotland's central belt and southern uplands are bracing for difficult driving conditions and minor public transport delays.
Forecasters predict the storms will develop through the afternoon and evening, moving northwards with frequent lightning strikes and hail in some areas. Temperatures will reach 19-21°C in southern England and 16-18°C further north before dropping sharply as storms arrive. Northern Ireland escapes the main warning zone but will see unsettled weather with showers.
The Met Office warns of sudden weather changes bringing power cuts and lightning damage to buildings. Officials advise drivers to exercise extreme caution as heavy rain will slash visibility and create hazardous conditions. Residents should avoid open water during electrical storms, seek sturdy shelter, and check flood alerts before travelling. The warning remains active until late Tuesday evening, with conditions expected to ease overnight.
