Strong winds of up to 60mph will batter much of the UK on Saturday as the Met Office issued a yellow warning following a week of torrential rain that has left communities dealing with flooding.
The warning covers most of England, Wales, parts of Northern Ireland and southern Scotland from 3am to 6pm on Saturday. Coastal areas face the strongest gusts of 50-60mph, whilst inland regions can expect winds of 40-50mph.
Power cuts, travel delays and damage to temporary structures are likely, forecasters warned. The timing compounds problems for communities already struggling with saturated ground and surface water flooding from persistent downpours over the past week.
Coastal areas of south-west and south-east England, along with parts of Wales, will face the worst conditions. Southern Scotland and eastern Northern Ireland are also included in the warning zone.
The combination of waterlogged ground and strong winds raises particular concerns about falling trees. Many areas recorded significant rainfall totals this week, leaving soil unstable and increasing the risk of uprooted trees blocking roads and damaging property.
Residents should secure loose garden furniture and outdoor items, whilst drivers of high-sided vehicles face especially hazardous conditions on exposed routes. The Met Office urged people to check local weather updates and allow extra time for essential journeys.
