The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rain across significant portions of the UK for Friday, 14th June, with the potential for localised flooding and travel disruption. The warnings, which cover various regions in England, Scotland, and Wales, indicate that some areas could see up to 50mm of rainfall, especially over higher ground.
In England, affected areas include much of the North West, including Cumbria, Lancashire, and Greater Manchester, as well as parts of the North East and the Midlands. Regions such as Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and parts of Yorkshire are also under the yellow warning. The South West, including Devon and Cornwall, is also expected to experience considerable rainfall. The Environment Agency has advised residents in these areas to be vigilant for potential surface water flooding.
Scotland faces similar conditions, with warnings primarily concentrated across the central belt and parts of the Highlands. Cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh, alongside surrounding regions, are expected to bear the brunt of the wet weather. Western and central parts of Wales, including Snowdonia, are also included in the Met Office's warnings, where the mountainous terrain could exacerbate the impact of heavy downpours, leading to increased flood risk from swollen rivers and surface water runoff.
Temperatures across the UK on Friday are expected to remain mild but cool given the wet conditions, generally ranging between 12°C and 16°C. Wind speeds are forecast to be moderate, typically between 10-20 mph, but gusts could be stronger in exposed coastal areas and over high ground, potentially reaching 30-40 mph. The combination of heavy rain and wind could make driving conditions particularly hazardous, with reduced visibility and standing water on roads.
The Met Office advises the public to prepare for potential disruption to public transport services, including trains and buses, and to allow extra time for journeys. Homeowners in flood-prone areas are encouraged to take preventative measures where possible. The warnings are expected to remain in place throughout Friday, with conditions gradually easing into Saturday, though isolated showers may persist.
