The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, impacting eight regions across the United Kingdom today. The warning, which is in effect from 10:00 BST until 22:00 BST, highlights the potential for significant disruption due to heavy rainfall, lightning, hail, and strong winds.
Affected areas include parts of England, specifically the North West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & The Humber. In Scotland, regions such as the Central Belt, Tayside, and Fife are also covered by the warning. Wales and Northern Ireland are not currently included in this specific warning, though localised showers remain possible.
Forecasters anticipate that some areas could see between 30mm and 40mm of rain in just one to two hours, with a small chance of up to 60mm in isolated spots. Wind gusts accompanying the thunderstorms could reach speeds of 30-40 mph, potentially leading to falling branches and difficult driving conditions. Temperatures across the affected regions are expected to remain mild, ranging from 18°C to 22°C before the storms arrive.
The primary concerns associated with these thunderstorms include localised flooding of homes and businesses, which could occur rapidly. There is also a risk of power cuts and disruption to public transport services, including trains and buses. Driving conditions are expected to be challenging due to spray and sudden flooding on roads, increasing journey times.
The Met Office advises the public to be prepared for these conditions. This includes securing loose garden items, checking local flood warnings, and considering alternative travel arrangements if journeys are essential. People are also reminded to avoid walking or driving through floodwater and to be aware of the increased risk of lightning strikes.
