Heavy rain is set to batter large swathes of the UK over the coming days, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for flooding and travel disruption across England, Scotland and Wales.
Western Scotland, parts of North West England and specific areas of Wales will bear the brunt of the downpours. Forecasters warn that accumulations could trigger surface water flooding in low-lying areas, whilst rising river levels increase the risk of more serious flooding.
The warning primarily affects Cumbria and Lancashire in England, where continuous rain is expected to accumulate significantly over higher ground. Scotland's western coastal areas and Highlands face prolonged downpours, whilst Wales will see the heaviest rainfall across its western and central regions, making driving treacherous.
Northern Ireland escapes a specific yellow warning but should expect generally unsettled conditions. Wind gusts of 30-40mph will accompany the rain in exposed areas, worsening already difficult conditions. Temperatures will remain mild at 8°C to 12°C, though the rain and wind will make it feel considerably cooler.
Residents should allow extra time for journeys, check local flood information and clear gutters and drains around their properties. Drivers face particular danger from standing water, which can conceal potholes and dramatically increase stopping distances. The Met Office will continue monitoring conditions and update warnings as needed.
