Leicester and the East Midlands face flooding risks as the Met Office issues a yellow rain warning for Friday, with up to 40mm expected to fall in just 15 hours.
The warning takes effect at 3am on Friday, 12th July, lasting until 6pm as persistent heavy downpours threaten to disrupt travel and cause localised surface water flooding across the region.
Most areas will see 20-30mm of rain, but isolated spots could experience up to 40mm over the relatively short timeframe. Urban areas and low-lying ground face the highest flood risk, whilst drivers can expect difficult conditions and extended journey times during peak commute hours.
The unsettled weather extends beyond the East Midlands, with Northern England facing scattered showers and the South East seeing rain move in later on Friday. Wales is forecast for a wet day with similar warnings possible, whilst Scotland and Northern Ireland will see mixed sunshine and showers.
Despite the deluge, temperatures will remain mild at 17-19°C across Leicester and surrounding areas. Light to moderate winds of 10-15mph won't worsen conditions significantly, though heavy rain combined with poor visibility creates hazardous driving conditions.
The Met Office urges drivers to reduce speed, increase stopping distances, and watch for standing water on roads. Residents in flood-prone areas should clear drains and gutters as a precaution, with weather updates provided throughout Friday if conditions deteriorate further.
