Heavy rain is set to batter North Walsham and Norfolk over the next 48 hours, with the Met Office issuing a yellow warning for flooding and hazardous driving conditions.
The warning came into effect earlier today, with forecasters predicting intermittent downpours that could overwhelm drainage systems in low-lying areas. Motorists face reduced visibility and surface water on roads, whilst coastal areas will see wind gusts reaching 40mph.
East Anglia will bear the brunt of the Atlantic weather system, though the impact varies across Britain. Southern England faces scattered showers, whilst northern regions and Scotland can expect a mix of sunshine and lighter rain. Wales and Northern Ireland will see mixed conditions with drier spells between showers. Temperatures remain below seasonal averages at 10-14°C in the south and 8-12°C further north.
Residents should check local flood alerts and clear drains where safe to do so, the Met Office advises. Drivers must allow extra time for journeys and maintain safe distances, whilst pedestrians should watch for slippery surfaces.
The unsettled weather follows a changeable spring of mixed dry spells and heavy rain. A low-pressure system moving from the Atlantic is driving the current conditions, bringing moisture and cooler air.
The Met Office expects unsettled conditions to continue into early next week, though rainfall intensity should ease. Whilst uncertainty remains over exact timing and locations of the heaviest showers, gradual improvement is forecast by midweek.
