Heavy rain will batter Shropshire and the West Midlands from Thursday morning, with the Met Office warning that up to 50mm could fall in 24 hours, threatening flooding and travel chaos across the region.
The yellow weather warning takes effect at 6am on Thursday, 20th June, and runs until 6am Friday. Most areas will see 25-35mm of rainfall, but isolated spots could be hit with 50mm over the period.
The alert covers Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, and parts of Warwickshire and the West Midlands metropolitan county. Towns including Ludlow face particular risk of surface water flooding on roads and in low-lying areas.
Residents should allow extra time for journeys as driving conditions will deteriorate due to standing water and reduced visibility. The Met Office advises checking local flood alerts and preparing for potential power cuts.
Temperatures will remain mild at 12-15°C, with moderate winds of 10-15mph that could gust higher in exposed areas. The combination will make outdoor activities unpleasant and driving conditions hazardous.
The weather service recommends securing outdoor items and clearing drains to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall. Officials will monitor the situation and update warnings as needed.
